Let me explain...



For the past several months I have been writing a book on the crucial but generally poorly understood subject of financial management in owner managed businesses. I know what a bugbear finance is to many entrepreneurs, business owners, partners, directors, managers and even to a number of finance staff themselves. Yet it is vital that those in business, and particularly those at or near the top of their enterprise - even if that enterprise is just a fledgling - feel comfortable with finance.

It is axiomatic that for a business to be right its finances must be right. And planning and managing your business through the numbers offers you opportunity after opportunity to dramatically improve your profit, and most important of all your cash. That may sound like empty rhetoric, but I promise you it is not.

I always knew writing this book would be a meaty project, but it has taken a good deal longer than I had hoped.

It has long been my intention to make this available as a free online resource.
Why would I do such a thing? It is the distilled wisdom of more than 53,000 hours of personal hands-on toil, learning, training, reading and hard-won practical experience, consulting and tuition. (By the way, that's roughly 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year, over 28 years. Actually it's more than that, but 53,000 hours will do.) Why would I spend yet more months writing it all down, explaining it, scratching it out, then explaining it better, just to give it all away?

There are two reasons.

One is genuinely purely altruistic. When you have read the case studies on the site you will understand. Alongside the substantial business success I have witnessed and been part of over the years I have also seen far too much stress, under-achievement, worry and in some cases financial carnage suffered by good people for no good reason. I want to put an end to that.

Many businesses that do poorly or fail could thrive and prosper with little more effort - and often less effort - from those who own them. The key is understanding what is important in business and what is not, and then getting good at those few things and delegating the rest. Apart from your actual product or service itself, top of the tree for importance comes marketing, closely followed by finance. However if I were to rank things by both importance and lack of understanding, leading to underutilisation, finance would be the clear winner.

I therefore have a burning desire - it's almost an obsession - to help those in business to really, truly and finally unlock the hidden power in their businesses using a genuine and deep understanding of finance as the key. Many people are tuned off by finance either because they do not realise its power and importance, or because they feel it is highly complex and specialist and that they will never make headway with it. Yes it is true that to understand finance takes some work, but believe me, it's not a quarter as complicated as most people seem to believe, and the pay-off is far greater than most people imagine.

As the old adage goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life".

It is those who own, or who want to own, a business who I am especially keen to help. The business owner has the greatest to gain when things work out, and the greatest to lose if they don't.

My second reason for making available to you this ocean of discussion, explanation, tips and advice is of course for my own business reasons, and I do not want to pretend otherwise. Unequivocally you are free and welcome to use the secrets, tips, guidance and in-depth instruction as often as you like and in as much depth as you like, as my very welcome guest. The nearly completed book currently contains around 75,000 words, over 400 pages. A lot can be said in that volume, and you undoubtedly will learn much from it. There is a good chance that you may have to dig no deeper than the substantial information here.

But there may remain some aspects on which you would welcome greater clarification still, or want to see the precise steps illustrated and demonstrated, either for yourself or for your staff. Or you may want access to specific tools to help you through some of the logic and number manipulation. Or a less detailed, more condensed 'overview' of the key issues and no more, may be what you are after.

For these reasons I will gradually - it all takes time - develop and make available additional resources, tools and materials which you will be able to purchase should you wish to do so. Whether you do or do not is of course entirely up to you. But so long as I have played my part by opening up and illuminating this treasure chest of essential business-building techniques for you to plunder to your heart's desire... I will be content in knowing that I have done as much for you as I can.

So there you have it.

The website address. Ah. I'm not sure yet. We still have things to iron out. It will not however be on this site, but on a much more substantial purpose-built website. When it is launched I will announce the new site address on this site.
